4A Assignment-Opportunity Belief
I think there is an unmet need for amnesty policy awareness on and near college campuses. There is underage drinking happening at college campuses across the country and world even, but when younger kids drink too much they fear the consequences and won't call the people they really need. People need to know that there are amnesty policies set to protect kids and keep them safe all at the same time. There is an opportunity to start a business or even just a club to open the eyes of college drinkers to their options without fear of consequences.
19-year old female who has never drank
-Have you ever known anyone that has had alcohol poisoning
- Yes, my roommate "where were they" at a small get together with friends "did you call 911" yes eventually "how long did it take you to call" about two hours
-Did you know that only 4 percent of people who fear their friend has alcohol poisoning ever actually call the ambulance
- I had no idea
-Have you ever binge drank?
- I've had a few sips here and there
-Did you know Shands hospital has an amnesty policy for underage people
- yes, I learned about it after my roommate went to the hospital
-When did you first learn about alcohol poisoning?
- 13-years old maybe, in middle school health class
Reflection:
Even though she doesn't drink she knows about the amnesty program because of an incident that happened with her roommate, but if her roommate hadn't drank too much then she wouldn't have heard about it. She wouldn't be put into man situations where she would have to call 911 for alcohol poisoning but its still vital she know about the program so she can advise others.
21-year old who drinks often
-Have you ever known anyone that has had alcohol poisoning
- No, never
-did you know that only 4 percent of people who fear their friend has alcohol poisoning ever actually call the ambulance
- I had no idea it was such a low number
-have you ever binge drank?
- Yes "where were you" at midtown bar hoping " who were you with" my sorority sisters and boyfriend
-did you know Shands hospital has an amnesty policy for underage people
- Yeah, I'm friends with some of the bouncers at Midtown and they told me about it
-When did you first learn about alcohol poisoning?
- I think I was in High School, a freshman may be. I saw it on Greys Anatomy I think
Reflection:
For someone who is often in a situation to get or know someone who will get alcohol poisoning, she knew about the amnesty program. It's also good that all the bouncers out at Midtown know that calling 911 can only help someone whos sick.
18-year old who drinks occasionally
-Have you ever known anyone that has had alcohol poisoning
- No
-did you know that only 4 percent of people who fear their friend has alcohol poisoning ever actually call the ambulance
- Wow, that's so low. I had no idea alcohol poisoning happened that often
-have you ever binge drank?
- Yes, one time "where were you" a friends house party "who were you with" a bunch of people I went to high school with
-did you know Shands hospital has an amnesty policy for underage people
- Yes, I heard about it from a friend who saw someone get taken to the hospital from drinking too much
-When did you first learn about alcohol poisoning?
- Probably around 13 or 14 years old, in a health class in school
She is well informed of the amnesty policy is she or anyone of her friends were to over drink and need medical help. Binge drinking can go start even younger than college so it's important that children know they won't get in trouble for being concerned for a friend.
Summary:
I do believe there is an opportunity here to help better inform college campuses of statewide amnesty programs because there are many drinkers that hear about it through friends but don't know the information for themselves. Right now only 12 of the 50 states have a medical amnesty program(hercampus) this can leave kids scared and can cause avoidable deaths. On avaerage, 4300 underage children die from drinking-related accidents. these deaths could be avoided if the amnesty program stretched to all the states. Information saves lives, so I believe that this is a great opportuinity to really inform children and help them understnd that they have options and they dont need to be scared about them.
Hi, Megan. I really like the topic you care about. Although I have not met alcohol poisoning people, I have heard many. Actually, I’ve never heard that Shands Hospital has an amnesty policy for underage people. I think that this news should be widely publicized. This will save the lives of many people. Thanks for letting us know!
ReplyDeleteHey! i enjoyed reading your belief! It was interesting the approach you gave to it. Also, I liked how you proposed that idea of more information, more inform people make up a better nation. What a better way than teaching college students the importance of knowing this. I think it was a great approach by you on this.
